Faces of FNP – Tia P.

It is my pleasure to introduce you all to one of our very accomplished Program Assistants, Tia P. Tia is a fixture of her community in Greensville/Emporia and Southampton, VA, where she has been teaching both youth and adults how to Eat Smart and Move More on a budget for the last four years.

Teaching children to move more!

What is your favorite part of your job?

Teaching my clients and seeing positive changes in both of my groups. I love it when my adult clients tell me that they have lost weight or that their doctor’s appointment/lab reports are better, due to information they received from my classes.

My youth audience is just a little different; they are my life line to the parents in my community. When my kids see me in the store, the parents can then put a face with Family Nutrition Program that is offered to their children in the school system. It brings joy to my heart when a parent tells me, «We tried the recipe that you gave to my child.»

What is your favorite healthy food?

Oh no! I have so many, but if I had to pick just one it would have to be spinach.

What is your favorite way to move more?

A light jog on the track in the evening hours with my iPod. It is very relaxing.

What success story has stuck with you during your career?

My adult success story would have to be my 72 year old client whom I met 3 years ago. She has lost about 20 pounds since she first enrolled in my classes and she no longer takes medication for high blood pressure.

My youth story is about one of my 3rd graders who does not go to McDonald’s anymore when his godmother picks him up early from school.

If you could be a fruit or veggie, what would you be and why?

I would be a cherry. I tend to eat way more vegetables than fruits, but I really love cherries. They are seasonal (this is a fruit that consumers have to wait for and they really look forward to eating) and so versatile. You can just wash them and eat them as a great summertime treat or when they are close to going bad, you can make a delicious cherry tart or pie.

What is your dream or goal for the future?

Now that I am retired from the Naval Reserves and I do have more time to focus on my dreams and not the goals of 50 other people. I want to go back to college and to receive my Bachelor’s Degree.

Faces of FNP Tia P

I recently had the opportunity to visit Tia and a group of volunteers who are helping us create a very exciting resource to share with you all later this summer. Be sure to like Tia’s Facebook page to get a sneak peak of the resource before it’s announced state-wide! I was so impressed by all the kind things everyone had to say about Tia’s hard work and dedication to her clients. If you are one of Tia’s clients, feel free to share a story of how she has touched your life in the comments.
