The Benefits of Breakfast

Making breakfast doesn’t have to be stressful, make it fun!

Why does breakfast matter?

  • Gives your child the energy he or she needs to focus and do well in school
  • Provides your child with the important nutrients he or she needs to grow and develop
  • Helps control appetite and makes your child feel fuller throughout the day

Here are some fun, easy tips to create a healthy, on the go breakfast in less than 5 minutes.

One rule to follow is always include a protein, a grain, and fruit or vegetable in the breakfast.

  • Make a parfait with yogurt, your favorite fruit, and granola in a cup with a spoon.
  • Combine a piece of fruit such as a banana or apple with a protein source such as a cheese stick or nuts. Make sure to give your child a plastic baggie for trash!
  • Make a peanut butter and banana sandwich your child can take and eat on the way to school.

Your don’t have to do this all yourself. Teens should be part of the process because you want them to develop these skills to go forward in life. Get your teen to take responsibility by:

  • Planning breakfast the night before together.
  • Include your teen in grocery shopping to pick out foods to eat for breakfast.
  • If you have time in the morning, sit down and eat breakfast together.
