Build Your Own Salsa

Are you looking for snacks that are healthy and taste great? Salsa is a great way to add fruits and vegetables to your snacks. You can use different items from your #BetterPantry to build your own salsa that your family enjoys!

Step 1: Choose a base!

Tomatoes, tomatillos, mangoes, or pineapples are examples of fruits and vegetables that would be a tasty base. Choose seasonal produce for a less expensive option that is full of flavor. You can also take advantage of your local farmer’s market for fresh produce that is in season. In Virginia, you can use your SNAP benefits at farmers’ markets to get 50 percent off the cost of fresh, locally grown fruits and vegetables at participating markets (orange pins).  Click here for a helpful video on how to use an EBT card at the farmers’ market.

Step 2: Add the Essentials!

Next, mix in ingredients that add great flavor to any salsa – lime juice, onions, and cilantro.  Lime juice can be freshly squeezed or poured from a bottle.  Cilantro and onions are best when they are fresh.

Step 3: Add Flavor and Texture!

Customize your salsa according to your family’s taste.  Consider your family’s favorite flavors and add hot sauce, garlic, black pepper, or whatever seasonings you have on hand.  Choose beans or vegetables such as corn, avocado, or chopped bell peppers. You can add as little or as much flavor and texture as you want! Be creative and use items from your #BetterPantry!

Step 4: Dip it!

You want to have something to dip your salsa with. Whole-grain tortilla chips, carrots, and celery are healthy foods to dip into your salsa.
