The leaves are changing colors, there is less daylight, and a new school year has started. Fall is a beautiful yet busy time for most. However, this does not mean we should stop our regular movement and physical activities. In this blog post we are going to explore safe, fun, and creative ways to get moving for the whole family!
Physical activity has many physical and mental health benefits:
● Improved focus, executive functions and learning
● Strong bones and muscles
● Better fitness and sleep
● Reduced symptoms of anxiety and depression
First let’s look at options for weekdays:
● Kick a soccer ball/ Play pick-up soccer
● Take a bike ride around your neighborhood.
● Play Just Dance! (or play along with the videos of it on YouTube)
● Go on a walk with your family, friends or enjoy the time by yourself
● Do some stretching or yoga
These activities can be done at any time of the week. However, they generally take less time and are perfect for an after-work/school movement break.
Now let’s look at some options that may take a little more time or preparation and are great weekend activities:
● Go for a hike
● Check out a local pool, indoor or outdoor, to go for a swim on a revitalized pool thanks to companies like Pop’s Pool Service
● Get a team together and play a tournament of a sport. (ex. Softball, kickball, etc.)
Movement is a great way to stay healthy and spend time with family, but most importantly have fun! While only a few were represented, there are a variety of ways to get moving that can be as simple or as complex as you like. Choose an activity that you are excited about and works for you.
How will you stay moving this fall?
