Build Your Own Snack Mix

Do you have trouble finding healthy snacks that your kids will enjoy? Snack mixes include tasty flavors to fuel your family activities. Make your own snack mix with whole grains, healthy proteins, and fruit. 

Snack Mixes Are Convenient

A snack mix is easy to make in bulk. Put the mix into smaller bags for on-the-go snacks in your: 

  • Lunch box
  • Backpack
  • Sports bag
  • Purse
  • Car
  • Desk drawer

There are many different healthy ingredients that you can use from your Better Pantry. Mix and match your family’s favorite flavors. Add ingredients that are sweet, savory, or a mix of both!


 

Building Your Snack Mix

Step 1 – use a whole grain cereal base. Add 4 cups of your favorite whole grain cereal. Choose a cereal shape that is easy to hold in your fingers. Kids love O-shaped or square whole grain wheat or rice cereals.  

Step 2 – use healthy protein to your snack mix. Add ¼ cup of your favorite protein. Unsalted nuts are a great protein option. Nuts to try:

  • Peanuts
  • Almonds
  • Cashews
  • Walnuts

If nut allergies are a concern, add seeds for protein instead! Seeds to try:

  • Sunflower seeds
  • Pumpkin seeds
  • Chia seeds
  • Sesame seeds

Step 3 – use your favorite tasty toppings. Add ¼ cup of each topping you choose. Mix and match your toppings for a family favorite snack mix.  

For a sweet snack mix, toppings to try:

  • Dried fruit – raisins, dried cranberries, banana chips, dried apricots, dates, etc.
  • Coconut flakes
  • Unsweetened chocolate chips
  • Cinnamon powder

For a savory snack mix, toppings to try:

  • Pretzels
  • Popcorn
  • Wasabi peas
  • Garlic powder
