Does your child eat school breakfast? The School Breakfast Program was launched in 1966 and has been in place permanently since 1975. The program is administered by the USDA and operates similarly to the National School Lunch Program. The program follows dietary guidelines to help improve the health of the children, such as including whole grains and fruits, eliminating foods with trans fats, and having appropriate calories depending on a child’s age and grade. School breakfast provides a healthy, energizing start to the day for over 11 million students across the country.

It’s an affordable option for busy parents. You can be confident that your child will get a tasty meal that meets federal nutrition standards. Your child can choose options with fruits, vegetables, and whole grains and lower in fat, calories, and sodium. And the School Breakfast Program offers the same free, reduced price, and full price meals pricing as the School Lunch Program, which is great for families on a tight budget.

What’s for breakfast? Nutrition!

National School Breakfast Week began in 1989 to raise awareness of the School Breakfast Program and share the message that eating a good breakfast promotes academic achievement and healthy lifestyles. Breakfast has many benefits for growing children. It helps to provide energy for the day. For children in particular, a good breakfast has been found to help school performance and encourage healthy eating behaviors. Children who eat school breakfast are more likely to:

  • Improve in reading and math skills
  • Have better concentration
  • Be more alert
  • Retain move of what they learn
  • Participate in class
