New School Year, New Healthy Routines

August is here and it’s back to school season. Making changes to your lifestyle requires changing up your current routine with new healthy habits. What better time to make some healthy changes than when you’re already establishing a new routine? This school year, commit to eating smarter and moving more as a family.

Breakfast – Start every day with a filling, healthy breakfast. Students who eat breakfast do better in school. School breakfast is a great option for students that saves busy parents time and money! Or try some of our ideas for quick and easy breakfasts.

Lunch – Make healthy choices for lunch by eating school lunch or packing a healthy meal. We have a new cookbook with 4 weeks of tasty, kid-friendly meals (and shopping lists) perfect for your student or yourself. Don’t forget to practice good food safety habits when packing lunches.

Family Dinner – Family meals build healthy eating habits and stronger families. Model eating MyPlate meals with your kids and they’ll eat more fruits, vegetables, and whole grains, and less saturated fat. Spending quality time together strengthens family bonds, keeps you aware of what’s going on in your kids’ lives, and is an opportunity for kids to learn table manners and the life skills of feeding a family. Try our meal planning tips to make cooking more at home less of a hassle.

Physical Activity Breaks – Look for ways to build physical activity into your day. If you live close to school, try walking or biking to school with your kids. Encourage your kids to play outside as soon as they get home from school to burn off extra energy before starting homework. Sign-up for sports leagues or stop by the park on the way home from school/work/childcare.

Set a few New School Year Resolutions to eat smart and move more as a family. Get your family’s input on what changes they’d like to make, like eating more fruits and veggies, trying a new whole grain version of a favorite food, or going for an after dinner walk around the neighborhood. Even small changes add up to big results over time. What habit(s) are you going to work on this school year?
